American Sign Language
ASL:  American Sign Language is the language of the Deaf in North America (United States, English-speaking parts of Canada, and parts of Mexico).  ASL is a language with its own content, grammar, and principles.  It also is a completely visual language.  American Sign Language includes a lexicon, inflections, semantics, syntax (grammatical structures), and pragmatics including  conversational structure and rules of uses.  While there has been no reliable survey of the number of people who use ASL as their primary language, estimates range from 500,000 to 2 million in the U.S. alone.
