National Geographic Bee
All seventh grade students participate in the National Geographic Bee in their World Geography class. The school competition of the Bee is usually held just before winter break. The winner from each class participates in the final competition. During the final competition, the field of students is narrowed down to two students who then participate in the championship round. The winner of the championship round is the school champion. The school champion will then take a test to qualify for the state competition which is usually held at Macalester College at the beginning of April. In each of the 50 states and territories, the National Geographic Society invites the students with the top 100 scores to compete at the state level. The state winner receives $100 and is invited to participate in the national competition. The national competition is held at the National Geographic Society headquarters in Washington, D.C. Transportation and accomodations for the trip are provided. The national winner receives a $25,000 college scholarship.
